Berchem Sainte-Agathe gets its name from 'the house on the hill' (Bergh and heim) in old French, and "Sainte-Agathe" after the saint martyred in Catania, Sicily who became patron saint of the town. The commune has kept a green and friendly character.

Today, while being an integral part of the Brussels-Capital Region, Berchem-Sainte-Agathe is a residential community that welcomes families and is tranquil and friendly.

Berchem-Sainte-Agathe has a surface area of just under 3km² and currently has around 25,000 inhabitants.
