Wannes Lecompte

Wannes Lecompte (°1979 in Etterbeek, lives and works in Brussels) paints in order to question the art of painting. How do you start a painting and how does it come into existence, is the - sometimes very literally taken - fundamental question in his work. In early 2017 he created the series Deverte for the Old Church in St-Agatha-Berchem He started it by carrying the still empty canvases from his house to the church in a small procession with the slogan "Everything that´s good, we must get rid of". There he let the paintings spring from the canvas the way Michelangelo freed his sculptures from the marble: abstract compositions in different shades of blue; shapes that remind us of winged creatures, distantly related to the frolicking pigeons that Wannes keeps.
